Photo Editing brought to you by Pixlr Editor

on 6/21/2011

Pixlr - Has an excellent set of tools that rival many software image editors. It has a full set of selection, drawing, retouching, cropping, resizing, and warping tools. You can add text, do all kinds of basic and advanced lighting and color adjustments, apply numerous filters, and supports layers with blending. It left me wishing that it was adownloadable application so I could use it anytime anywhere.

Who needs online tools?

The pixlr services is built for both non-professionals and professional users with editing needs such as editing web images to be posted on social networks like Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, or image sites like Flickr, Fotolog, Photobucket etc.

It's also widely used by professionals for fixing images for news sites and blogs etc.

Performance?

Since the editors are Flash-based, how they run depends on what kind of computer you have. If it is lagging you can try to shut down other web page that might be running Flash ads or close other software on your computer that is taking a lot of CPU.

Why Flash and not HTML5?

We are very pragmatic when it comes to development and use the tool best suited for the product we build. Flash still gives us big advantages compared to HTML5, like the 98% penetration of flash, open/save files local and a bunch of other stuff.

What if they lack features that I need?

We are constantly developing the applications to be more than they are right now. If you have any feature requests please send them to info@pixlr.com

How about privacy?

From Flash 10 and later, images are opened direct and local in your browser (i.e we don't see them in any way and they don't leave your computer).

Files that are posted to us via the API or our add-ons are automatically deleted from our servers after 5 minutes.

What is the developer's main focus?

Compare the applications from Pixlr to any other Flash-based image editor and you will notice that they start up in less than 2 seconds. That is our priority! No waiting, just great tools.

Pixlr Editor can help students be more productive in the creativity area. Pixlr Editor has a lot of powerful photo editing tools in its arsenal and it also allows you to save your creations. It can greatly help MMA Students, and even students who are in the advertisement field, etc. What's good is that it has a lot of powerful tools, yet it doesn't load slow. It doesnt need installations or whatsoever.

Pixlr Editor is a really powerful tool. It's probably the best online photo editing application out there. We evaluate this as a "useful" online application. Not only is it useful, but it's convenient (for it loads fast) and user-friendly (easy interface much like Adobe Photoshop).

Rating: 8.3/10

"PicResize was founded in March 2005 and has grown to become one of the most popular online image editing tools available on the Internet due to its
ease-of-use. To date, there have been over 5 million pictures resized and edited at PicResize. On September 9th, 2008, PicResize's advanced online picture
editor, PicResize 3.0, was renamed DrPic.com. The service will always remain free to use.http://www.drpic.com/"

SumoPaint
SumoPaint is another free online and desktop photo editor with basic and advanced features. You can upload a photo from your computer or from a URL.
Basic overall photo editing like brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, color balance, and levels can be achieved from the menu bar on top of the editor.
The left pane has the drawing tools which include several shapes. One, in particular, is called the Symmetry tool, which “mirrors” a shape’s stroke, creating a symmetric pattern.
Besides tweaking images, I find Sumopaint to be useful in creating simple logos using the text and brush tools.
Other than the ads that appear on both sides of the web editor and intermittently crash Chrome (the tool uses Flash to run the web version), this photo editor gets the job done easily and is more than suitable for users who are not photo editing experts

Paint.net is (at least in our opinion) the simplest option on the list. It still comes with a ton of powerful features like layers, adjustments, and user-created plugins, but is simple enough that complete newcomers can grasp it immediately. The features are across the top, and filters are accessible from a drop-down menu.
Some of the special effects are pretty cool: sharpen, blur, distort, emboss, etc. You can even get some Instagram-esque vintage effects in there for good measure. We don’t want to waste too much time on this one. It’s got a lot of features, an easy interface, and a simple layout. If you’re struggling with others on this list, then stick with the easiest option.
